CASE STUDIES
Case Study 1: Sticking to The Script
It seems the comms requirements at events are growing every year. August 2011 saw our biggest assignment in our 15 year history when we provided the comms at a 2 day outdoor music festival featuring The Script & Eminem.
For the first time we deployed Voice over IP telephone lines x 15 – these replace the need for BT lines and reduce costs by up to 70%. VOIP telephone lines also offer far superior flexibility and functionality to standard BT lines.
In the connected world we live, it would seem that the need for broadband is stronger than the need for Oxygen. We provided broadband and wifi to:
- Backstage production so that they could stay in constant contact with HQ
- Setanta for the streaming of live video
- Cool FM – the local radio station, to facilitate their outside broadcast
- Ticketmaster to support the live scanning of barcoded tickets at the 4 entrances and to allow the sale of tickets at the gate. We also provided data connections between the various gates using Fibre
- A media centre to allow real time reporting from the festival
We used 25 wireless access points to ensure wifi was available across the entire backstage area.
We also deployed 4 “Red phones” – standard hardwired BT lines which are functional even if broadband goes down or there’s a power failure. These were deployed in Event Control, Production and Medics Control and were for communications in case of an emergency.
At the last minute the location of Event Control was moved from one end of the venue to the other. However our ex-BT engineers were on site and we moved the lines without a hitch.
Keeping control of such a large site was a big challenge for the organisers. We made life easier for them by deploying temporary IP CCTV across the site which allowed them to see everything that was going on from the production cabin.

Case Study 2: Keeping on the right side of the Police.
When The Police came to town, their communications needs were clear, and TempComms were on hand to make sure everything ran like clockwork.
A greenfield site was transformed into a musical festival village with TempComms supplying 10 telephone lines, 3 broadbands and wifi across stage left, stage, stage right and the dressing rooms. We also set up a temporary office for 10 admin staff travelling in the entourage.
Thanks to the expert planning of Lisa, our project manager, every detail of the assignment was planned to perfection and installed and tested in ample time. She’s so good at her job – in fact Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.
But we were almost Driven To Tears by a very last minute change – the dressing rooms had to be moved.
As a matter of routine, TempComms always has I.T. and telecoms engineers on site so it was no problem to us. Within 30 minute we’d moved 3 telephone lines and 3 broadbands to new dressing rooms.
The artistes and crew were delighted with what we did and we all left happily – rewarded with signed tee-shirts.
This was one job where there definitely wasn’t a Sting in the tail.
